Why don't they use NAUTICAL miles as the unit of measuring distance?

NASA has used nautical miles since the Apollo Project because the conversion factor to metric, used by most of the rest of the world, is easier than converting statute miles. Really! But nautical miles are not what Americans are accustomed to, just like metric, which switching to would make more sense than nautical.
