I commend you on not talking about her behind her back like everyone else. And you answered her question tactfully. Sometimes an answer like that is best. Just keep doing what you're doing, sticking up for her and whatnot. If she asks you again, maybe offer to go shopping with her or something to pick out some flattering tops for her new size.
